An ode to the famous beat poet, the late Allen Ginsberg, with James Franco as Ginsberg. The film traverses some of the key points in the poet's life — namely the 1957 obscenity trial surrounding his most famous work, "Howl." (David Strathairn, Jon Hamm and Jeff Daniels all have a part in the courtroom scene.) Howl includes recreations of interviews, court scenes, sexual encounters, and a powerful reading of "Howl" by Franco. The film is in black and white and color, with animated sequences and archival footage.

Produced by Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman, Elizabeth Redleaf and Christine K. Walker. Director of Photography: Edward Lachman. Studio Spotlight screening courtesy of Oscilloscope Laboratories.
