Artist-in-Residency, June 12 – June 26, 2012

(Setauket, June 2, 2012) Gallery North is pleased to announce that sculptor Pam Brown will be their featured Artist-in-Residence from June 12 through June 26, 2012. This is the second year that Gallery North will host a resident artist to work in the Anais House, a studio located on the gallery’s grounds in the Historic District of Setauket, NY. 

Gallery North is a not-for-profit organization founded in1965 by a group of artists whose mission was to support and promote local and regional artists of Long Island, NY. Through innovative exhibitions, community events, and educational programs, Gallery North continues to bring to its community a vibrant calendar of programs and exhibitions featuring the best of Long Island’s contemporary artists and artisans.

Gallery North’s Artist-in-Residency program offers an artist a studio to work free of outside obligations, providing the valuable time that is necessary to the practice of art-making.

During her residency, Brown will continue to build a series of sculptures that are stylized figures of nature. The underlying theme of her work is the impact of mankind on the environment.   

On Wednesday, June 20, 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Brown will give a demonstration on how to work with the commercial oven-baked clay, Sculpey. In addition, guests are encouraged to visit and meet the artist at the Anais House Studio during open hours: Tuesday & Thursday 3:00 – 5:00 pm, Wednesday & Saturday 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm.

Pam received her B.F.A. from Alfred State College of Ceramics in New York and her M.F.A. from Mason Gross School of Art, Rutgers University, New Jersey. She also studied at the Rhinehart School of Sculpture at the Maryland Institute of Art; Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine; and the Fine Arts Work Center, Provincetown, Massachusetts.

She is the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a New Jersey State Visual Artist Grant, and two Special Opportunity Stipend grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Brown is best known for sculpture. Her large-scale public sculptures were installed at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, NY; Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island, NY; Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, NY; Long Island University in Brookville, NY; the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN; Chesterwood Preservation in Stockbridge, MA; and Mather Hospital, Port Jefferson, NY.

Currently she lives in Stony Brook, NY, where she maintains a studio and continues her research in sculpture. Although her focus has shifted from outdoor public sculpture to smaller tabletop and wall sculptures, she still continues to exhibit her work. Brown’s most recent exhibitions include: Naturally, at the Hewitt Gallery of Art, Marymount Manhattan College, NY; The Work of Women, at Gallery North, Setauket, NY; Nine, at Art Strand, Provincetown, MA; The Body Speaks, at the Carving Studio & Sculpture Center, VT; Common Thread, George Marshall Gallery, York Museum, Maine; and Home Sweet Home, Pelham Art Center, NY.

Brown also teaches sculpture and is the Director of The Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling College, Oakdale, NY. To date, she has curated, co-curated and facilitated over 50 exhibitions.
