African American Read-In

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook (UUFSB) extends an invitation to the community to join us on Saturday, February 4 at 380 Nicolls Road, East Setauket between 12 and 4 p.m. for a “Read-In” celebrating African American authors.  This annual nationwide event is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English, and its Black Caucus and has been endorsed by the International Reading Association.  Over a million readers of all ethnic groups, from 50 states, the District of Columbia, the West Indies, and African countries have participated.  The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.

Participants (of any age) are encouraged to read, alone or with another person, a poem or part of a story or essay by a published African American writer.  Readers can do more than one piece.  Other participants may simply watch and listen and support the readers.  Walk-ins are welcome, but participants are encouraged to call or email Barbara Coley, Chair of the UUFSB Racial Concerns Committee, to confirm a time slot (758-3436 or coleybjc@gmail.com). Time slots are scheduled to last not more than 5 minutes and Certificates of Participation are issued to all presenters.

This event is a wonderful chance for people of all ages and all races to share a love of reading and to celebrate the breadth and depth of African American writing during Black History Month.
