Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae Rock Stony Brook

Close to 4,000 students and fans showed up for the concert.

Pop artists Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae headlined an end-of-semester concert at Stony Brook on May 6, attended by nearly 4,000 students and fans.

Monae's stage presence and creative decisions – during one song she appeared to fight off dancers dressed like Death, and painted a representation of love on a canvas during another song – reminded some of a more accessible Lady Gaga.

And Bruno Mars – well, if the wild, screaming crowd was any indication, he was a hit too. "I traveled seven hours just to to see him and he did not even bring me on stage," said Kelsey Dearstyne of Auburn, N.Y. (He did not bring any fans onstage.) "I would die for Bruno Mars, but he wouldn't do the same," she said. Her friend Melissa Cartner added, "He definitely brought excitement to Stony Brook."
