Weekend Guide: Tennis Tournament, May Festivals, Gallery Receptions

Patch picks for weekend fun.

Spring is in full swing, and that means the start of the outdoor festivals. Also on the agenda for this weekend: a pair of art gallery receptions, comedy, music and more.

Recreation

  • For young tennis players, the Ivan Lendl Junior Tennis Academy is launching a tournament series at World Gym Setauket starting on Friday. Click here for more details.
Family
  • Celebrate spring with a Mayfair event at Play Groups School on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
  • A traditional May Day celebration will be held at Benner's Farm on Sunday starting at noon.
  • Murphy Junior High School will hold a poetry slam on Friday night at 7 p.m.
  • Benner's Farm will also hold a "Caterpillars and Critters" workshop on Saturday for kids, in which they will learn all about the bugs and critters that live in the garden and make a take-home "caterpillar" that will grow into a garden.
Fine Arts
  • Check out the art gallery opening at Jefferson's Ferry starting at 4 p.m. featuring the work of Marilyn Gartelmann.
  • Gallery North is also hosting a gallery opening for its exhibit "The Delight of Movement: Six Kinetic Sculptures," starting at 5 p.m. on Friday. 
  • The Long Island Museum is showing "An Artful Life: The Baker/Pisano Collection" through May 27, along with its newly reopened carriage gallery. 
Entertainment
  • Head to Mint in Stony Brook Village on Friday at 6 p.m. for a spring cocktail reception.
  • The Ward Melville Players will present the comedy "Moon Over Buffalo" on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. (tickets $10).
  • On Saturday, the Three Village Historical Society will hold a bicycle tour of the Culper Spy Ring starting at 10 a.m. at the village green in Setauket.
  • Stony Brook University's Chamber Music Festival continues through Sunday. Click here for more details.
  • The Acrobats of Cirque-Tacular come to the Staller Center on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the "Not Just For Kids" series (tickets $15).
Community Benefit
  • Check out the rummage sale at Temple Isaiah on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Ann Marie's Farm Stand is holding a seedling sale on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
