Stony Brook Homeowner Slapped with More Housing Code Violations

The homeowner of 150 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook was hit with multiple misdemeanors after town officials allegedly found  more than 17 students living in the single-family home. Brookhaven investigators executed a search warrant on the property, which is approximately 7,000 square feet in size, to find more than 17 students living there on May 23. 

New Alternative Education Program on the Horizon

A new alternative education program is set to replace Ward Melville High School's FOCUS and P.M. school programs beginning in the 2013-14 school year. Those two programs currently address the educational needs of students who for one reason or another find it difficult to succeed in traditional classroom settings.

Soccer Field Construction Ongoing at Stony Brook University

Construction of new AstroTurf soccer fields at the South P Lot at Stony Brook University is underway. The construction is part of an agreement between the Three Village Soccer Club and the university reached in March to more evenly distribute playing field space between the club, which had occupied the space for decades, and the university students' teams, which needed more space to practice and play its interscholastic games. 

New Eatery Coming to Stony Brook Village Center

A new café called Roscoe & June is set to open this summer in the Stony Brook Village Center, a village center spokesperson told Patch on Tuesday. The eatery replaces The Dish, which itself had replaced The Golden Pear. Patch previously reported that the owners of The Dish had recently tried to sell the business for $169,000 in the summer of 2012.

N. Country Road Property Won't Be Re-Zoned, Town Board Says

The Brookhaven town board has voted down a proposal to commercialize the zoning of a piece of residential land on North Country Road in an historic district. Developers had proposed two office buildings for a total of 33,000 square feet and about 220 parking spaces for the property, which sits adjacent to Village Automotive Center and the Detmer Farm, and touches Route 25A at certain points. Most of the property would have needed a zoning change from A1-residential to J2-business in order to move forward with the project, but the town board killed the project following a public hearing on May 21.

130 New Doctors Graduate from Stony Brook School of Medicine

Stony Brook University's School of Medicine on Thursday sent 130 new doctors into the health care community at its annual graduation ceremony. The doctors took the Hippocratic Oath, representing the 39-year-old School of Medicine's largest class to date.

Crime Report: Christian Avenue Resident Reports Burglary

A homeowner on Christian Avenue in Setauket reported a burglary on May 31 in which jewelry was stolen. According to a police report, the thief may have entered the house through the front door sometime around 3 p.m.

Women's Personal Shopping Boutique Opens in Stony Brook

Longtime friends Laurie Lederman and Robyn Lion enjoyed shopping at Carrie's Closet in Plainview so much that they partnered with its owner to open a new location: Carrie's Closet East, located at 1239 North Country Road in Stony Brook.
