South Setauket Man Among 9 Indicted in 7-Eleven Sting

Authorities on Monday indicted nine people from New York and Virginia – including a South Setauket man – for smuggling illegal immigrants into the country and forcing them to work long hours for minimal pay at several Long Island 7-Eleven stores.

SBU Official: Illegal Off-Campus Rental Listings Dramatically Down

In the fight against the problem of illegal boarding houses, one simple step taken by Stony Brook University officials has paid off big-time. Landlords listing available rentals must now prove their housing is legal by showing their permits – a step which Elaine Crosson, vice president for external relations at SBU, said has led to a decrease of more than 70 percent in the number of rental listings on the school’s off-campus housing website.

Town Board Passes Another Anti-Boarding House Code Change

The Brookhaven town board on Tuesday took another action meant to curb the illegal rooming house problem, unanimously passing an amendment that clarified definition of the word "kitchen" in the town's housing code.

Bicyclist Dies After Fall on Old Town Road

A Suffolk police spokesperson said a bicyclist traveling on Old Town Road late Friday morning has died from his injuries. While police initially reported that the accident involved a car, the spokesperson now says the bicyclist, a male of an undisclosed age, may have suffered a "medical event" while riding his bicycle and fell off. An autopsy will be performed to determine the victim's cause of death.

News Corporation CEO Rupert Murdoch made headlines in Stony Brook on Tuesday, announcing a $50,000 donation to the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting at Stony Brook University.

Gelinas Educator Lauded as Middle School Science Teacher of the Year

If his commitment to the science programs at Gelinas Junior High is any indication, Gary Vorwald loves teaching science. Now, for his work as a teacher, science department chairperson and Science Olympiad coach, Vorwald has been named "Middle School Science Teacher of the Year" by the Suffolk County Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State.
