The Great Escape: Restore, Relax and Renew Yourself with Yoga

Yoga is one way to relax.

I started practicing Yoga before I had children. In my twenties it was a challenging new addition to my exercise routine, allowing me to get a good work out and relax at the same time.

It wasn't until I was pregnant that yoga took on a whole new meaning for me. I found a prenatal yoga class that I loved and  twice each week I would practice yoga as my belly grew. It helped with the pain in my lower back, I gained less weight, and the breathing I learned even helped during my labor and delivery.  Yoga was also a time for me to bond with the baby in my belly. It was a very special hour that I was able to enjoy all the way into my third trimester.

Now with three kids, a husband that works full-time, and a part time job, yoga is one of my favorite escapes from the hustle and bustle of daily life.  At least once a week I find a class in town that suits my needs for the day.  I might want to take a Hatha class to relax.  If I feel the need to detox I take a Bikram class. Finally, if I feel like a good workout I look for a challenging Vinyassa class. There are a number of yoga studios in Three Village, but here is a sampling:

  • Mindful Turtle Yoga & Wellness, Stony Brook and Yoga for Life, Setauket. Both locations are full service yoga studios which offer classes, workshops and resources to enrich your yoga practice.  They offer a variety of yoga class types for all skill levels.  Click on the links provided to view their websites and class schedules.  Both studios offer prenatal yoga classes.
  • , Setauket. When you are looking for a yoga class that is going to make you sweat this is the place to go.  Bikram yoga, also called hot yoga, is the practice of yoga postures and breathing exercises performed in a room heated to 105 degrees with around 40 percent humidity.  By the end of the class you feel relaxed and energized at the same time.  Make sure you bring lots of water and a towel for the class. for a recent Patch story on the studio.
  • Yoga classes at Remedy Fitness Studio, 128 Old Town Road, Setauket.  Remedy is a full-service gym that offers yoga classes as part of its group fitness schedule. The reason it is one of my favorite places in Three Village to take a yoga class is that when you walk in and pay $10 for the class, free babysitting is provided in their clean and well-maintained nursery.  Call the gym for their yoga schedule at 631-444-5044.  If you attend Theresa's class Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., you might just lay your mat down right next to mine.
