Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps Honored in Washington D.C.

Student-run ambulance corps was selected as the Collegiate EMS Organization of the Year.

At its annual conference in Washington, D.C., the Annual National Collegiate EMS Foundation honored the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps as the Collegiate EMS Organization of the Year for 2012-2013 out of more than 100 such agencies.

“We’re very excited about the award. This award is timely and well deserved for our members who have answered numerous calls throughout very challenging times this past fall and winter,” said Frankie Rivera, SBVAC President and a Stony Brook University senior double-majoring in sociology and women’s studies.

Founded in 1970, the 90-member agency consists entirely of student volunteers and is a state-certified ambulance corps that regularly serves both the Stony Brook University campus the surrounding communities. The SBVAC, which operates three ambulances and one advanced life support vehicle, responded to close to 1,300 calls in 2012.
