Stony Brook Associate Dean Earns Nursing Excellence Award

Lori Escallier, Ph.D., receives high honor.

Lori Escallier, Ph.D., an associate dean at Stony Brook University School of Nursing, was awarded Wednesday for her mastery of patient evaluation and outcomes.

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council considered 25 nominees, one from each member hospital, and chose just two 2013 Nurse of Excellence award winners, Catherine Videtto, RN, of St. James, and Escallier, of Southampton.

Published in dozens of peer-reviewed journals, Escallier has presented her  scholarly research on nursing evaluation and theory at local, national, and international conferences, according to the hospital council.

Escallier's past honors include the 2012 Five Year Distinguished Service Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the 2012 Outstanding Achievement in Education and Student Relations for the Robert Wood Johnson RWJ Scholars.

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council's Nurse of Excellence awards were created after the New York State Legislature discontinued its Nurse of Distinction program in 1995.

“Nurses will see their leadership roles expand because of reforms inherent in the Affordable Care Act,” said Paul Connor, the chair of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council board of directors and CEO of Eastern Long Island Hospital. “In addition, they will be called to fill the gap of primary care services, as insurance coverage expands under reform and as baby boomers age ... there is a level of comfort going into the future knowing a nurse will always be there.”
