Spooky Spots and Spirits of Three Village

Three Village has its share of local ghost stories.

Long Island, and especially the Three Village area, has been reported to be filled with spirits of colonial peoples, native Americans, and also shipwrecked mariners. Here are a few local haunts and spooky sightings around Three Village, according to the Long Island Paranormal Investigators and the author of Ghosts of Long Island II, Kerriann Flanagan Brosky.

The Joseph Smith Hawkins House

Hawkins built his house in 1757, which also served as a tavern, hotel and post office, allowing him to be one of the messengers for the Revolutionary War-era Setauket spy ring. Located near Stony Brook village, this is reportedly full of haunting and spirits, but is now privately owned.

The Grist Mill

The Stony Brook Grist Mill dates back to the 1700, but the first Mill was wiped out by a flood and rebuilt, as it was one of the centers of colonial life. According to the LIPI, people have claimed to see dark figures around the mill, as well as near the water in the surrounding park area. Some have also claimed to see an apparition of a woman. Brosky has seen a set of scales in the mill, where the pendulum swings on its own during her investigation.

The William Sidney Mount House

This house was built in 1725, and was owned by the American painter, William Sidney Mount. This house, located at the corner of Stony Brook Road and Route 25A, is presumably haunted by a little girl.

The Country House

The Country house dates back to the 1700s, and has been reported as having one of the highest activity levels for a haunted house. Guests of the restaurant are said to have seen the ghost of Annette Williamson, a young woman that was murdered in her family home during the American Revolution. Flashes of light are also often associated with the apparition. Brosky has recorded EVPs, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, where voices and noises can be electronically recorded, on the second and third floor attic of the country house.

Mary Grave Legends – The Tales of Shep Jones Lane

Also near Three Village, there are areas that are supposed to correspond with the Mary Grave legends on Long Island, according to the LIPI.

There have been reports of Satanic rituals conducted here in  the past.

"During investigations we have gotten an EVP of a scream not associated with anyone in the area. We have also had investigators who have felt something touch them, as well as seeing what fits possibly into the category of shadow people," said Robert Levine of the LIPI.
