Setauket's Caroline Church Gets Facelift

Steeplejacks climbed 75 feet in the air to freshen up the look of the church.

With a setup that looked like it could have come straight off a movie screen, workers from Valley Restoration, based in Torrington, Conn., recently completed exterior resurfacing at the Caroline Church of Brookhaven.

Church officials announced last week that "steeplejacks" scaled the walls of the church to complete "a much needed exterior resurfacing" 75 feet above the ground.

"Using real steeplejacks allows the work to be done without the use of booms or scaffolding, which would cause damage to the grounds surrounding the historic structure," the church said in a statement.

The Caroline Church was built in 1729 – the second-oldest Episcopal Church in continuous use in the nation – and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
