Setauket Mill House Wheel Gets Fix

The water wheel that is part of the simulated mill house at Frank Melville Memorial Park will soon be turning once again thanks to a fix currently under way.

Frank Melville Memorial Foundation president Robert Reuter said in an email to Patch that an axle broke in 2012, which stopped the wheel from turning. It has been removed from the house and set on dry land at another spot in the park while the axle is repaired. Trustee Haig Sefarian of Flagpoles Inc. is engineering and completing the repair pro bono, with assistance from park manager Hap Barnes and park trustee Bob Brown as well.

The work "should be done soon but meantime provides a fun bit of sculpture in the park," Reuter told Patch.

According to its website, the park opened in 1937 and sits on 24 acres at the northern end of the two ponds in Setauket.
