Paving Begins on Greenway Trail Expansion

Phase 2 in Setauket nears completion.

The expansion of the Greenway Trail west of Gnarled Hollow Road is one step closer to completion as state crews began paving that new section of the trail earlier this week, according to the community group Friends of the Greenway.

"They will then according to NYSDOT look to put the final paving course on both the eastern & western ends of the trail soon weather permitting so they can do their signage, final grading of the sides, bollards at crossings, painting of the stripe, kiosk building before they plant starting in late summer," said Charlie McAteer, chairman of Friends of the Greenway.

The parking lot at Limroy Lane in Setauket has yet to be paved, and the crossing at the Gnarled Hollow Road underpass has yet to see its new traffic signal system installed.

Meanwhile, at the older portions of the trail, the safety lights embedded in the roadway to warn drivers of passing pedestrians are in need of repair. Signs saying "Road Lights Under Repair, Proceed With Caution" have been placed in several spots. McAteer said Friends of the Greenway is working with the office State Assemb. Steve Englebright for the funding to rework the Old Town Road crossing, and is looking at options for the other crossings.

"We asked those signs be put up similar to ones a few years ago when repairs were needed to warn persons on the trail that the in the road lights may not be working," McAteer said, "but the advance warning lights on poles a distance from these crossings are working to warn vehicles of persons approaching the crossing along with the yield to pedestrians signs which are posted by the trail."
