More Than 550 Locals Face Power Outages

Thunderstorms cause the power to go out for some in Stony Brook.

The sudden onslaught of afternoon thunderstorms Friday afternoon has taken out electricity to more than 550 residents in the Stony Brook area.

Long Island Power Authority is reporting 2,702 customers without power in Suffolk County after a string of afternoon thunderstorms, largely along the North Shore, struck on Friday, according to its outage map.

There are 557 outages in the Stony Brook area as of 2:45 p.m., with many concentrated east of Nicolls Road and along Stony Brook Road. LIPA is indicating that it hopes to restore all power to the area by 7:30 p.m.
