Coalition Forms in Response to Concerned Homeowners Group

An organization aimed at protecting the rights of landlords as well as educating both tenants and landlords has formed, largely in opposition to the Stony Brook Concerned Homeowners Group.

The Coalition of Landlords and Tenants of Stony Brook say they believe their rights are being ignored and while they too are against illegal rentals, they say clarification is needed on current codes and that the codes themselves must be legal.

Stony Brook Athletic Director Abruptly Let Go by University

im Fiore athletic director for Stony Brook University was abruptly relieved of his position on Tuesday.

President of the university Samuel L. Stanley announced the move in an email sent out to the campus community. It read:

I am writing to inform you that Jim Fiore is leaving Stony Brook University. Senior Associate Athletic Director, Donna Woodruff will serve as Interim Athletic Director as we commence a national search to identify a new Athletic Director.

Police Called to Investigate Death at 150 Christian Avenue

Suffolk County police were called to 150 Christian Avenue last Thursday to investigate a death.

Police said they received a call to the home at 9:30 a.m. According to a police spokeswoman, a non-criminal death investigation was conducted at the house. Surrounding neighbors told Patch they saw a body being removed from the home.

Police did not release any additional information on the investigation including the age or sex of the victim.

Popular Stony Brook Village Eatery Closes Due to Eviction

The eatery that filled the space of the former Brook House in Stony Brook Village has shuttered due to an eviction from the property’s management company.

Brian Doyle, an attorney from Farrell Fritz, which represents the Ward Melville Heritage Organization and Eagle Realty Holdings, said Rockwell Cuisine Concepts failed to follow the terms of their lease, which expired in June. According to Doyle, a judge ruled that Rockwell Cuisine Concepts had not properly exercised the option to lease and so they were denied the option to renew.

Stony Brook University Makes Ugliest Campus List

A recent survey has Stony Brook University at the top of the list, but the news isn't pretty. In fact, it’s ugly. 

Our hometown college has madeTravel and Leisure’s list of America’s ugliest college campuses and calls the buildings “bunker-like”.

SBU Breaks Ground on $194M Medical and Research Building

Stony Brook University broke ground recently on new center that will showcase advanced medical research and treatment.  

The $194 Million Medical and Research Translation Building, will house advanced biomedical imaging and a PET/CT scanner. The MART will also contain 12 new classrooms and a 300-seat auditorium to host conferences, lectures and other events. There will also be an outpatient Cancer Center will include exam space for medical and surgical oncology as well as patient amenities and support
