Level 1 Sex Offender Registers Residence in Stony Brook Area

By law, school district is unable to release the exact street where the sex offender lives.

A moderate-risk Level 1 sex offender has registered a residence in the Stony Brook area, according to a letter distributed by the Three Village Central School District last week.

The letter does not detail the street of residence of the Level 1 sex offender because it is illegal to do so; the address has not been provided to the school district.

In the letter, the school district said this information is not meant to "unduly alarm" residents, and noted that it is illegal to use the information provided in the letter to commit a crime against, discriminate against or harass the registered sex offender.

The letter reads, in part:

"We are dedicated to the safety of our children while they are in school. All of our schools have strict sign-in/sign-out procedures for our students and all visitors must obtain a visitor’s pass upon entry into the school, which must be worn during their visit. In addition, our school curriculum includes teaching personal safety. Please be aware that a detailed description of the convicted sex offender is automatically given to each staff member and bus driver. The school district will continue to take responsible and appropriate measures to protect our students. It is unfortunate, but necessary, that we all take this opportunity to review safety rules with our children and to be ever vigilant of their computer use, reminding them to avoid circumstances which increase their vulnerability. Please keep this in the proper perspective for your children by reassuring them that we do have a safe community but that they need to be alert and careful."

The district last informed residents of new sex offender registrations in May, when a moderate-risk Level 1 sex offender and a moderate-risk Level 2 sex offender logged addresses in the Setauket area. Another letter was distributed in March, when another moderate-risk Level 1 sex offender arrived in the Setauket area.
