Cops ID Hit-and-Run Victim

Suffolk County Police are investigating a hit-and-run they say occurred early Friday morning that left a man dead. Police identified the man who was struck and killed on Ridgeway Avenue early Friday morning as 47-year-old Joseph Santiago, of 55 Ridgeway Ave.

Driver Hits Medical Building, Charged With DWI

Police on Tuesday arrested Susan Kelly, 54, of Stony Brook, following a crash in which police said she hit two parked cars and then crashed into a building shortly after 3 p.m. Kelly is charged with DWI and third-degree reckless assault, both misdemeanors. The building housed a medical office and two elderly people were inside the waiting room at the time of the accident; they were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for minor injuries they suffered when they were hit by debris from the ceiling and walls of the building. Kelly was not injured in the accident.

Nighttime Nicolls Road Closures to Begin Sunday

A $2.97 million Suffolk County project to repave Nicolls Road between Middle Country Road and Nesconset Highway will require nightly road closures, a county official said Tuesday. Beginning the evening of Sunday, Aug. 25, detours will take drivers off Nicolls Road between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights in the area of Centereach and South Setauket.

New Church Opens its Doors in Stony Brook

A new Reformed Church of America congregation is growing in Stony Brook where another one recently closed its doors. Crossroads Church, located at the corner of Oxhead Road and Pembrook Drive and led by Rev. Doyle DeGraw, is hosting an open house on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. to introduce themselves to the community and welcome potential new members. "Expect a lot of friendly people, some good music, and a lot of energy and enthusiasm," DeGraw said. "We have a vision for something."

Carl Bernstein, Pulitzer Prize Winner, to Join Stony Brook Faculty

Stony Brook University's newest visiting professor is none other than Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Carl Bernstein, who along with Bob Woodward broke one of the biggest stories in American politics in the 1970s when they exposed the Watergate controversy as reporters for The Washington Post. The university announced Thursday that Bernstein, 69, has been appointed to a two-year position as a visiting presidential faculty member who will teach and give lectures for the School of Journalism and the departments of English, history, political science, sociology and writing and rhetoric.

3 Local Schools Designated 'Reward Schools' By State

As the Three Village Central School District prepares to go back to school, three of its schools have been designated as "reward schools" by the New York State Department of Education. Nassakeag Elementary, Minnesauke Elementary and Gelinas Junior High School have landed on the reward schools list.

Local Scout Returns from 75-Mile Adventure

Matthew Carney is going to remember the summer of 2013 for a long, long time. The 15-year-old Boy Scout from Troop 70 in Setauket recently returned from a two-week, 75-mile trek through the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico with fellow scouts through the Philmont Scout Ranch. "It’s like nothing I’ve eve done before, nothing like any of the summer camps I’ve already done," Carney said. "It was really great."
