Bellone to Host World Water Day Celebration

Suffolk County will join communities around the world in celebrating World Water Day Saturday.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Girl Scouts are hosting an event at Smith Point Park where Girl Scouts will be able to earn a Love Green patch by helping clean up the beach, test water quality and listening to a presentation by  Bellone, Stony Brook scientist Chris Gobler and the Suffolk County Department of Health.

Bellone has identified water quality as the biggest issue facing the county, saying, “Nitrogen poisoning of our surface and groundwater’s is the greatest crisis this county has faced in generations. The water that feeds our wetlands and marshlands protect us from storms like Superstorm Sandy. The advance levels of nitrogen pollution being inflicted on Suffolk County’s ground and surface waters threatens the future of Suffolk County.”

The event, from 1-3 p.m., is open to all youngsters.
