Town Beach and Marina Parking Fees Upheld

Councilwoman Jane Bonner introduces resolution to withdraw the fees, but the town board votes it down.

The Town of Brookhaven on Tuesday upheld the beach and marina parking fees established about a month ago, despite an attempt by one town council member to comb through the town budget to find savings that would offset the cost of repealing the fee. The Town Board voted 3-4 against rolling back the fee, with council members Jane Bonner, Tim Mazzei, and Dan Panico voting in the minority. By working with various town officials, Bonner said she was able to find $625,000 in offsets within the town budget to withdraw the fee without sacrificing overtime costs budgeted for town operations. Her plan included eliminating three positions that are currently vacant due to the town's hiring freeze. She called it "painless ways to come up with the cuts …

SBU Students to Get Free Rides – on Suffolk Buses

Newsday: University will reimburse county for student fares, county will increase Saturday bus service.

Stony Brook University will reimburse bus fares so that students can ride Suffolk County Transit’s S60/S69 and 3D routes for free on Saturdays, Newsday reported Thursday. The county and the university partnered up to increase Saturday service to encourage students to stay local for entertainment and shopping in places like Port Jefferson Village and Smith Haven Mall, according to the report. "This will make it easier for students to support local businesses and take cars off the road," Suffolk County executive Steve Bellone said. Shore Road Projects Aim to Improve Setauket Harbor Area

The Village Times Herald reports on the latest improvement projects on the road and at the beach.

A project to improve road conditions on Shore Road in the vicinity of Setauket Harbor has begun to work, according to a report published Thursday in The Village Times Herald. In the original part of the project, the road was paved and raised 1.5 inches and drains were installed to control stormwater runoff. The Village Times Herald cites deputy highway superintendent Lori Baldassare as saying the runoff is controlled via a drainage system that filters sediment though a rock bed. However, the rock bed has taken over much of the beach off Shore Road by the dock – which has drawn some complaints. Click here to read the full story from The Village Times Herald.

Town, Homeowner Resolve Christian Ave. Dispute [POLL]

Building department issues permits following a plea and conditional discharge.

Brookhaven Town has resolved a dispute with a homeowner over a home at 150 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook that has been the center of neighborhood controversy since March of 2011, when the town declared it an "illegal rooming house." The building department has issued permits for modifications to the home that were originally done without the proper permits, town spokesman Jack Krieger told Patch in an email on Monday. In January, the town said it would be taking the homeowner back to court. Since then, Brookhaven has worked with the homeowner, identified as Steven Graziano, to bring the house into compliance with the town code. Graziano has also paid the town $2,000 in fines. "The applicant's proposal and plans demonstrate compliance and…

Hahn's Measure to Expand Anti-Overdose Program Passes County Legislature

A new bill will set up a pilot program that will equip police cars in some precincts with Narcan, which can help reduce the risk of death in cases of opiate overdose.

The Suffolk County Legislature has adopted a measure that will equip Suffolk County police officers in some precincts with an anti-overdose medication that has been shown to help victims of opiate drug overdoses. Suffolk Legis. Kara Hahn, D-Setauket, introduced the bill in response to an epidemic of opiate deaths over the past several years: Between 2004 and 2011, opiate deaths in Suffolk County increased by more than 70 percent, she said in a statement. Oftentimes, she said, police officers are the first responders to calls involving overdoses. Previously, a program to provide the drug to emergency medical technicians was set to begin this year; this measure expands the program to include the police. “Time is critical in all medical …

IF, usually, experienced EMT workers are the first on the scene, and we know that they are qualified and insured, to administer these narcotics, "why" would the County authorize county employees, to do this kind of work, if they are not qualified to do it ? The politics aside, this is is the issue. Will the police officers and their union, or the County, have to pay the same malpractice insurance…   more ›

Public Meetings Set for New Carmans River Plan Discussion

Town council seeks more public comment on the new version of the plan.

Members of the community will have the chance to publicly comment on the newest iteration of the Carmans River Protection Plan, after the Brookhaven Town Board passed a resolution that set two public meetings on the issue. The meetings will be held at Town Hall on May 30 at 6 p.m. and June 2 at 1 p.m. with the goal of soliciting community input – a key component that the original plan lacked, according to First District councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld. "They had these meetings but they had them called 'the Carmans River protection plan' and only had them at Town Hall," Fiore-Rosenfeld told The Village Times Herald in a recent interview. "How many people from Three Village are going to show up to a meeting for a river they've never heard …
