Veteran Cardiologist Joins Stony Brook School of Medicine

Dr. Mark Borek begins new post on Jan. 3.

A cardiologist recognized for more than a decade as one of the best doctors in New York will join Stony Brook University's as an assistant professor, the university announced last week.

Dr. Mark Borek, a practicing cardiologist on Long Island since 1991 who has been recognized for the last 13 years as a top doctor by Castle Connolly's "Top Doctors: New York Metro Area," begins his new post Jan. 3.

"Mark has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues in the community because of his dedication and commitment to his patients. For this reason and his broad clinical experience and teaching skills, Mark is a welcome addition to our faculty," said Dr. Luis Gruberg, interim chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at .

Borek, who began his career with Island Cardiology Associates of Smithtown in 1991, will treat patients at the hospital and at outpatient centers in East Setauket and Islandia. Borek has held a voluntary faculty appointment in the School of Medicine since 1995.

"I am hoping that my long and attentive experience in private practice with its emphasis on direct patient care will offer a valuable complementary perspective for the teaching and consultative functions of Stony Brook's Division of Cardiology," he said in a statement.

Borek lives in Stony Brook with his wife Marisa, a nurse practitioner, and their two children.
