Student Struck By Campus Police Car, Hospitalized

Student pedestrian is listed in fair condition.

A Stony Brook University student was sent to the hospital after being hit by a university police car en route to a 911 call Thursday night, campus officials confirmed on Friday morning.

Robert J. Lenahan, chief of police and assistant vice president for campus safety at SBU, said in a statement that shortly after 10 p.m., eyewitnesses reported that a campus police officer was driving on Circle Road, west of Engineering Drive, with its emergency lights activated when the officer struck a sidewalk and veered in the opposite direction, causing the vehicle to hit the student.

The vehicle careened down an embankment, according to eyewitnesses, and the student was lodged underneath the vehicle after it came to a rest.

According to Lenehan, both the student and the officer were hospitalized; the officer was treated for minor injuries and released, while the student was listed in fair condition.

The Stony Brook Press reported on Thursday night that the officer was responding to a call about a large gathering on the north side of the Stony Brook Union when the accident occurred.
