Stony Brook Student, Mother Face Deportation

Nadia Habib, 19, and her mother Nazmin have been told to leave the country by Sept. 29.

Local officials have intervened on behalf of Stony Brook University junior Nadia Habib and her mother Nazmin, who are facing deportation to their native Bangladesh.

According to The Daily News and WABC-TV New York, Habib, 19, arrived in the U.S. as a baby along with her mother, and did not know she was an undocumented immigrant until she was in high school. Her father has a green card, and her three siblings are citizens because they were born in the U.S.

The family, which lives in Queens, would be separated should Habib and her mother get deported.

Jon Schneider, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, told Patch on Friday that Bishop's office was contacted for assistance by Stony Brook University officials as well as by Habib. He said Habib now has an appointment with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Thursday.

The ICE has recently adopted a policy of focusing on the deportation of those who pose a danger to society rather than individuals who pose no threat or who are actively contributing to their communities.

"It's certainly our hope that ICE will follow their own policy with respect to Miss Habib," Schneider said.
