Stony Brook Student Killed in Shirley Crash

Jeanine Rescigno, a West Sayville native, was studying journalism.

Police have identified the woman killed Monday night in a car crash in Shirley as 29-year-old Jeanine Rescigno, a Stony Brook University student from West Sayville.

According to police reports, Rescigno was headed southbound on the William Floyd Parkway in her 2010 Hyundai Elantra when she rear-ended a 2006 Hyundai Tuscon at the intersection of the parkway and Coraci Boulevard at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Rescigno was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the Tucson, Amanda Zawada, 24, of Lake Ronkonkoma, was treated for minor injuries at Brookhaven Memorial.

Police impounded both vehicles for a safety check and said the investigation is continuing.

A university spokesperson confirmed Tuesday that Rescigno was a journalism student at Stony Brook. According to Rescigno's Facebook page, she was an employee of Molly's Irish Pub in Brookhaven. An individual who answered the phone at Molly's on Tuesday declined to provide any additional information.
