SBU Professor Wages Attack on Tuberculosis
Dr. Iwao Ojima teams up with a drug company to develop a new treatment for TB.
A distinguished professor of chemistry at Stony Brook University is researching a new treatment for tuberculosis, which kills about 3 million people per year, according to a report published Thursday in The Village Times Herald.
Dr. Iwao Ojima, who lives in Port Jefferson, formed a relationship with drug company Sanofi to develop an innovative new treatment that would complement existing drugs to attack TB bacteria in a different way.
Ojima is also the director of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery at Stony Brook University, made up of 26 scientists, as well as a mentor for past Siemens and Intel semifinalists and finalists at Ward Melville High School.
