PHOTO: Huge Umbilic Torus Sculpture Arrives On Campus

Centerpiece by artist Helaman Ferguson installed Wednesday in front of Stony Brook University's mathematics building.

One year after installing a massive concrete base for his 24-foot bronze sculpture in front of the mathematics building at Stony Brook University, artist Helaman Ferguson was on campus Wednesday to erect the centerpiece.

The towering Umbilic Torus, a mathematically inspired 3-dimensional ring invented by the artist, only has one edge that wraps around three times. Its installation was commissioned by local hedge-fund billionaire, and big-time donor to Stony Brook University, Jim Simons. Photos of the sculpture being created are on the artist's Facebook page.

The sculpture will officially be dedicated on Oct. 25.
