#91 – Walk the Labyrinth at Avalon Park

Our series of local activities associated with the unique identity of Three Village.

In the heart of in Stony Brook, perhaps a ten minute walk from the park entrance, you'll find a clearing that at first looks a little like Three Village's own Stonehenge.

Circular in shape and surrounded by stones of various sizes, including some perfect for sitting on, the clearing is actually a labyrinth.

Labyrinths differ from mazes in that they are traditionally constructed with just a single, winding, non-branching course. Greek mythology tells of a labyrinth constructed to hold the Minotaur, a fictional beast resembling half man, half bull. We imagine it might be fun to engage the kids' imaginations with a little game of make-believe, perhaps playing out a heroic battle with a giant creature at the center of the labyrinth and then celebrating with a victory feast of treats and lemonade afterward.

With the weather (in theory) on its way to warming up and the hours of daylight slowly stretching longer, spring is a perfect time to seek out the labyrinth and let your imagination run wild.
