#74 – Visit an Historic Lighthouse

The lighthouse in the Village of Old Field is open to the public for visitation during the daytime.

Now home to the Old Field Village Hall, the historic lighthouse has stood watch over the Long Island Sound since 1869.

What you may not know is the lighthouse is actually the second one built at that site. Only the keeper's cottage remains from the original lighthouse, which was completed in 1824. During World War II, the federal government seized the property for national defense purposes, with a Coast Guard unit operating from the site. You can read a full history of the lighthouse on the website of the Village of Old Field.

It's open to the public for daytime visitation, at which point you can see Connecticut on a clear day, and makes a nice picnic spot as long as you don't leave any litter behind – it's one thing the village's code enforcement officers look out for.
